i own a 1993 pontiac trans am and lately it started to overheat. I replace the water pump and also clean the radiator. A mechanic came by and told me that it could be the radiator cap. I bought a new radiator cap and ran the car for like about a week. then again it started to overheat, but now it only overheats when i push hard on the accelerator. When that happen my dad purged it and told me that a lot of air had gone in. what can the problem be??? oh by the way i check the oil and their is no water in it also no oil in the radiator so i am guessing its not the head gaskets.

The thermostat would be the most likely problem. It should only cost about ten to fifteen dollars for the thermostat and gasket. If not you may have a clog in the radiator. Take the rad cap off and let the car warm up. Check to see that the coolant is flowing good. The last thing to check would be the fan. When it is at normal operating temp rev the engine and see if the fan comes on. If not the check the fuse and fan assembly. Good luck.
EDIT: If the thermostat is new and you have good flow through the radiator, then I would go get the combustion gas test done.

Well without seeing it i would say this to check it. #1 at operating temp wait for the fan to come on.This works with out driving it. #2 At operating temp with the fan coming on (turn off engine) touch radiator in different areas to see if there are cold spots. (Restricted) #3 If this all is ok touch with a rag protecting your hand the upper and lower hose. The upper should be the warmest and the lower the coolest. *this checks flow. Also if you have recently (prior) to the problem done any servicing of the cooling system not bled the system of air properly there could be pockets of air which will not transfer excess heat to the coolant. There is a bleed valve near the thermostat housing for this purpose. It takes about half and hour of running time to burp the system, with a special funnel. If you have a special vaccuum filler system this could be done in 2-4 mins.

Listen to Rat on this one, sounds like possible combustion in the cooling system. A head gasket can fail or a head crack, and still put no oil in the antifreeze, just combustion pressure.

It could be the head gasket anyway. Have your mechanic do a combustion gas test on the cooling system. That will determine it for sure.

Head gasket.
There is a compression leak (not blown)between the combustion chamber, and cooling jacket. Which by the way negates oil contamination (for now).
Oh, it's only going to get worse....

You ever think maybe the thermostat is just on its last leg? Or...now call me crazy....but if it only happens when you really get on the accelerator.....Ummmm...Don't go lead-footing around like a moron. Or maybe the gauge is bad...maybe these simple easy things are what you should have looked at before you started replacing things...but thats just me...what do I know?
