when the moon blocks the sun it is called a solar eclipse. the sun doesn't block the moon because that would mean the sun would have to get between the earth and the moon..which is impossible. But a lunar eclipse is when the sun shines on the earth and the earths shadow falls on the moon. so then you don't see the moon when perhaps the day before it was visible.

Moon Blocking Sun is a Solar Eclipse - fairly uncommon - can go years between seeing one in your particular area.
Sun blocking moon - Doesn't Happen. For the sun to block the moon, then the sun would have to be between the earth and the moon. Physically impossible - in the first place, the sun being 800,000+ miles across, the moon AND earth could orbit INSIDE the sun (with room left over). In the second place - the sun in roughly 93 MILLION miles away, and not moving this way.

The Sun cannot block the Moon, since it is farther away than the Moon. When the Moon is blocking the Sun it's called a solar eclipse.

The latter is a solar eclipse but a lunar eclipse is when the earth's shadow falls across the face of the moon, at night: it is not a matter of the sun blocking out the Moon's light. The sun cannot be seen during a lunar eclipse.
