I live in a council flat and I want to DO SOMETHING! I don't want to die in the town I was born in. I'd love to move to the US, but I know it's not that easy. I'm 26 and I have a degree but I only work in an admin job - call me a loser if you like, but I feel completely unfulfilled and I want to do something so I don't lie on my deathbed and regret not doing everything I could've done. What can I do?

when, since you asked this under philosophy i'm gonna give you the philosophical answer.

fulfillment of one's life varies because everyone is different. the actions needed to achieve such fulfillment vary even more, because everyone's conditions are extremely different. there's not a formula to achieve fulfillemt, because it's all within yourself and doing something that YOU think is fulfilling.

so you wanna come to the US? then do it! don't give up just because it's difficult. do stuff that YOU like to do.

In some ways, it sounds as if you have been doing "what you should do" and are now looking for more "what should I do", even though "what you should do" so far, hasn't fulfilled you, or offered you happiness in your life.

What you "should" do is stop asking what you "should" do and do what you want to do.

You've done the high-school to degree to job thing. The nice, safe, "what everyone should do" thing.

Do you have kids? A husband? These are going to be your next steps if you stay on the track you are thus far and in 20 years, you'll be writing a post saying: "I'm 46, I have a degree, husband, kids, but I feel unfulfilled and don't want to lie on my deathbed regretting..." yada, yada, yada.

If you don't already have these things, then why bother with the job that keeps you nailed down? It sounds like you want to "GO", so "GO". You have nothing to concern yourself at this moment but yourself.

I personally dropped out of high school after my teachers started boring me to death, joined the army at 17, left after my 2 years were up and then traveled like a gypsy, not caring how I lived, for about 9 years, seeing everything I could.

When I was your age, I got my GED, my college and had a job making 70k a year within four months of my degree. Which anyone can do, at any point in their life, I don't care what people say.

You're not a loser, but I think you're concerned so much with what you "should" do that you haven't been doing what you want to do. So, go do it. NOW.

Then make the decision what kind of life you really want after having been on both sides of the fence, so-to-speak.

That's my take on it.

Peace.

Well, let's see. You have a degree. That is nothing to sneeze at! Most people do not have a degree, many more did not even finish high school. An administrative job is important.

Age; 26. Most people will live now days to 90. That is a long time ahead of you.

I do not know how you can move to America. I suggest that you write to the various government agencies that give you permits to work here. Do your homework. Use the internet.

Next make up a resume. Locate employment agencies in the United States. I know of one very well; Oasis Staffing in West Palm Beach, Florida. Contact the agencies, see what you qualify to do.

Also, do you know what you want to with your life? If you do, again, 99% of the people on this planet have no clue as to what they want to do. That makes you ahead, already.

Make sure you write down what you want to do. Put it in 1 year, 5 year, and lifetime goals.

You have already made the first step. By asking for help on Yahoo Answers.

Not a loser in my definition.

Hope this helps.

You work in an admin job, you do something. The US is
a great country to live in, and US lifestyle is usually
convenient. That said, living in a country which is not
as convenient provides more of an opportunity to do
something about it. It is an unfortunate tendency that
convenience leads to temptation of laziness. People get
into the mind set that life is convenient, so they might
stop contributing. However, the convenience is a result
of the contribution and can't be sustained without contribution.
If it is you seek to find comfort on your deathbed then perhaps
you should comfort others on their deathbed. Will this sort
of action guarantee that others comfort you on your deathbed.
No, but your hope can be justified by the setting of good
example. You don't have to be successful at providing
comfort, but practicing is a good start. There are many
ways to practice. Some people are good talkers and some
people are good builders. Taking the time to investigate
the opportunities for contribution will most likely discover
some opportunity for involvement.

There's visa issues with going to the US but if you can get a work visa, even for a short time it should give you a good starting point. I so know how you feel and admin works sucks so bad it's scary and totally insulting that intelligent human beings are asked to do that crap. You need to figure out what you want to do first before you can start working out how to do it. You want to live in America, but doing what? Think about what you would really really love to do and then work out what you wouldn't mind doing if the first thing doesn't come off or takes time. Find something cool or semi-cool to do in the meantime or you'll end up getting really depressed and will struggle to do anything at all. Be bold and go for it!! Good luck

Set yourself small goals and when you achieve them move onto something bigger. Like one week your goal could be to get a new job, then another to save a cetain amount of money within a month or something. Building up to moving to America. Every challenge you fill will boost your confidence and make you feel like you are aiming towards something.
Try not to get too depressed. Take responsibility for your life you only get one so go for it! Best of Luck xx

Your plans won't materialize until you begin some planning as to what you would like, where you would like to be an what is needed to get their.

Your screen name though, indicates that you will likely continue with things as they are until you are ready for a change. Wanting is only part of the change process.
