A lot of them closed because they weren't profitable. Those in the northern states could only be open half the year. Also, a one screen drive-in can't compete with multiplexes.

They haven't all closed. In fact a new one opened on the waterfront in Toronto a couple years ago. There is one that's been around for a long time about 20 minutes away from where I live.

Cost of operations and declining viewership was the main reason. Alternative requirements for the land was another. As always, the mighty buck is the motivating factor. Thankfully there are some people who saw the advantages and joys of such a fun experience...either for the 'daters' or the families who can't afford 12 bucks PER ticket! (It's even more comfortable and quieter in the car...so screaming babies to deal with...just my wife poking me in the side...LOL!)

They werent profitable and for liability reasons. Too many people were doing bad things like getting horribly drunk there. When someone does something like get drunk on your property and then they get hurt. You can be held responsible.

Theres quite a few in Phoenix as well.. They usually have double features which make them even more appealing :)
