I do buy my books, but I always get them from my local Hospice, so they don't cost me full price and I know the money is going to a very worthwhile cause!
I must admit I haven't been in my local library for some years now, but that is more because it is located in the centre of town and parking is a problem. Especially, if like me, I always end up taking out my full quota of books allowed, as they do tend to be hardbacks and very heavy.
However, I will find out my library card, now you've given me a reminder, and I will make an effort to start using them again. As I've recently started studying again, it will be a good way to get hold of reference books that I don't necessarily want to buy.
Thanks.

For the most part... I buy. If there is something I want to see how it is before spending the money... I will go to the library and check it out.
I don't know, maybe it's living in this small town that has caused me to steer away from libraries. I used to live in Duluth Minnesota... they have a beautiful library. I used to practically live there. I was always checking books out and returning them a week later to get new ones. In the small town I live in now, the library is so small and there is never anything I'm interested in.
My son gets books from the school library all the time.
I have this belief that you can never have too many books. That may be why I prefer to buy them.

I buy most of my books from boot fairs or charity shops. 50 pence to a pound for a good book is cheap, when I finish them or don't like them back they go to the charity shop. I see it as doing my bit for recycling!
I do borrow the odd library book but always end up paying more for the late fine than if I'd bought it!! Because I'm at work all the time the library is open I can never find the time to read and return it.

I love the library. I can get lost in there for hours. My problem is I am overwhelmed by choices, and think I can read everything in three weeks, but I can't. So I borrow one at a time, and I love it! If I find I don't like it, I haven't made a commitment by buying the book, and it may be better suited for someone else's needs. Often times, there are treasures there I couldn't find for purchase, so it's a win win situation!

I actually buy my own and borrow from friends. I have a really small local library and i've pretty much read all the books there that are of interest to me.

I am like your 1st and 2nd answerer. I borrow books at the library or order them from the library to borrow. If I really like them, I buy them. It's the same with dvd's and renting and buying dvd's. I rent them. IF I like them, I buy them, but never do I let anyone borrow a book or video. I'll let them watch it at my home or even write down the name of the title so my friend can go buy the book or video or rent it or borrow it elsewhere, but 80% of the time you never get back what you lend someone so there is that forever saying never a borrower or lender be and that's me!

Mostly I buy them, because then I have them around to read again if I want to. I'll still check one out of the library every once in a while, if I see one I really want to read and haven't been able to find it in the bookstores. But I don't get to the library very often.

I'm a librarian too so I usually check out new books first to see if I like them and if I do then I often buy them so I have them for my own personal library. Public libraries are great, but unfortunately they're not open 24 hours a day like my personal library. :-)

I buy most of my books. Dont like taking books from library or renting as they limit the numbers of books that you may borrow and time limit.
Anyway, I live in KL, Malaysia. It's eay to find cheap books here if you know where to look. I always visit Paylessbook. During their warehouse sale, I can get 5 paperbacks for just RM12.
I would re-sell those which I dont like or just send it to the donation box, after reading them
