Well there is a lot of good heavy metal bands out there. Firstly it depends on what kind of heavy metal you want though. I'll put into catogories what I like:
Classic Metal (predominant metal bands who's prime was towards the begining of heavy metal, some classic metal bands fit into NWOBH [New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and as such I will classify them there as well)
Led Zepplin
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
KISS
Motorhead
Alice Cooper
Ozzy Osbourne
Accept (i really only have listened to their song Balls to the Wall, but its good)
Dio
Def Leppard
Deep Purple
NWOBH (new wave of british heavy metal, metal from britain during the 1970's when the popularity of bands like black sabbath, led zepplin, deep purple, and uriah heep dwibbled. Typically this is also classified as classic metal as well.)
I
ron Maiden
Judas Priest
Def Leppard
Motorhead
Glam Metal (heavy metal popular in the 80's, where the bands used a more poppy tone and dressed in women's clothes)
i don't listen to glam metal, in my oppinion as well as most others, glam metal was not real metal
Thrash (the underground metal during the popularity of glam metal, the hardest music to ever reach the ears of the public at its dawn)
Metallica
Megadeth
Anthrax
Slayer
Sepultra
Exodus
Testament
Death Metal/Melodic Death Metal (you should know what this sounds like. I'll put a * next to the melodic death metal bands)
Death
Children of Bodom*
Amon Amarth*
Arch Enemy*
Power Metal (really, really fast tempos and amazing guitar parts)
Dragonforce
Hammerfall
Helloween
Industrial Metal (by far my favorite, hard hitting metal with industrial rock)
Marilyn Manson
Static-X
Orgy
Ministry
KMFDM
Danzig (all of their stuff from 1996 until now)
Rob Zombie
White Zombie
Fear Factory
Godflesh
Rammstein
Others (anything that doesn't fit cleanly in those catogories)
Soulfly
Tool
Pantera
KoRn
Linkin Park (somewhat)
Alice in Chains
And I'm discovering new bands almost all the time. This list is just off the top of my head. There is so much more than just this. But this should get you started. Start with the bands you recognize (try one or two from each of the above) and then try to find some others for yourself.

Search for these on iTunes:
Classic Rock/Metal like ACDC, Guns N Roses, Darkseed etc..
Nu Metal like Slipknot and Linkin Park. Also A Dark Halo (found on iTunes by fluke, great band)
Then you've got your two classic metal bands Metallica and Iron Maiden.
Follow this up with Motorhead and Foo Fighters!
Hope this helps...

Depends on what kind of metal you listen to, dude..
If you want something well heavy: Gojira.
Something classic: Deep Purple or Diamond Head.
Thrash: Megadeth or Anthrax.
Or just random metal bands:
Sepultura
Soulfy
Maiden
Motorhead
Budgie
Blue Oyster Cult
Rammstein
Slayer (what a cliché..)

I rather like Enter Shikari at the moment, but they're sort of electro/dance metal (a bit of a weird combination). System of a Down are good and you can't fault Korn for big chunky riffs, even if they are a bit cheesy and American!! I was a big Metallica fan as a teenager but their new stuff sucks, the old stuff still rocks though. Megadeth are good for a laugh, I just can't take them seriously at all, Dave Mustane sounds like he's constipated.
