Various reasons propelled the US into Vietnam, mainly a desire to repel Communist Aggression. As time progresses, we see more intricate details of other reaons, many that helped make the war unpopular such as the drug running from Cambodia.

Idealists who believed Communism was the next great threat wanted to stop its spread. Others believed the US was the last chance for democracy in a region very much torn by war.

Viet Nam was at war prior to USA involvement.
Essentially, it was under French control, but the northern half was overrun with Communist support.

The French closed up shop and went home in the 1960's, and the US became involved. Viet Nam became a symbol of the Cold War Era as Democracy sought to expunge Communism from that 3rd World Nation.

As the war escalated, it was the Soviet backed north against the US backed south. But here at home, it became very unpopular with anti-war sympathizers because the war was viewed as a civil war, internal to Viet Nam, in which we had no business participating.

We took a foothold in the south, but our backs were to the sea. The Soviets were able to expand their support of the north and their attacks into the south through the neighboring nations of Cambodia and Laos.

By the time the US pulled our troops out, and let the Communists have both north and south Viet Nam,
57,000 American Soldiers had given their lives, for seemingly nothing.

to try to stop communist from taking over, again we had no business being there. it was not our fight.

even the vietnamese didn't want us there.
the reason it was so unpopular were for the same reasons as that the iraqi conflict is so unpopular, we were getting young men killed for something that has nothing to do with us.

Both wars are just a bunch of political B.S.
