If you were an active churchgoer/ bible reader you would know that the phrase is the "LOVE OF" money is the root of all evil. This makes a HUGE difference in the interpretation.
Churches ask for contriibutions to do good works and to spread God's Word. Also to pay the bills like anyone else.
1Timothy, 6:7-10.

A church is also a business...bills need to be paid to keep the doors open, even for the simplest ministries:
-building usage
-electricity and other utilities
-pastor salary (this depends on the size of the church...the larger the congregation, the higher the pay...)

Because churches need money to run themselves. It's too bad that there aren't a lot of nice rich people willing to fund churches, and due to this lack of generosity, churches need money.
