I only get involved if they ask for help.

Depends on how serious the problem is and how desperate hey are for help. I stay out of it if the person is unstable or if he/she has it covered. I get involved when he/she cuts off contact with everyone else and if he/she is helpless. Look at the circumstances before you act.

It's hard to determine and I know how you feel (like how far am i really willing to get myself involved)
well it depends if I know both people. If I know both people I will just try to get into it and try to somewhat help resolve it, but, yea, you have to know how to talk and have to understand both sides don't side with one person over the other. Know when to talk and when not to.
If they are fighting over stupid stuff tell them that they are stupid for fighting over stupid stuff and always try to relate to them even if that means to fudge the truth a lil
and remember that once you decide to join in, you have to stick with them till the end, for better or for worse.
OR
Just stay out of it and hope and pray for the best to turn out.

Depends on the problem. If I feel I NEED to get involved in the problem, then I would, but other than that, I AVOID AVOID AVOID. You dont want to be in others business, you'll just create more trouble.

I only get involved when/if they ask me for help...or I feel that they are being destructive & might be a danger to themselves or others.

i do now,stay out of it, some problems are way to complicated to get involved, not enough time sober and clean to be sucked in by the insainity of anothers missery and self lothing,

I will get involved if children are involved, such as being unsupervised and someone is in danger.

I guess I tend to get pretty involved especially here on yahoo answers, I figure they asked, so if I can I will offer my opinion.

Sometimes yes , but only if my competences or experiences will match the needs of the person.
Otherwise i will "listen" make no recommendations but only suggestions.

i never involve myself with anybody elses problems...i have enough of my own, thanx. however, i would be there if someone asked for advice.
