An LCD screen has a fixed resolution. This is called the native resolution.

If your desktop is not at the same settings as the native resolution then the monitor has to scale the image up to fit the screen.

So if you have a panel that has a native resolution if 1400 by 1050, but you set your desktop to 1280 by 768, then the monitor has to add an extra 120 columns of pixels and 282 rows of pixels to get a full screen picture.

It does this by spacing the added row and columns evenly across the image, and making the extra pixel values an average of the pixels next to them.

This give you a full screen image, but the extra rows and columns have the effect of blurring the image slightly.

If you set the desktop to the panel's native resolution then there are no extra rows or columns added an the picture is crisp and clear.
