Wow, I can only put two? This is going to take some thought.
I do have to say that those who put down just the bible... that was a bit of a pathetic answer. While you can have your opinion... broaden your horizons... look at those who wrote and create places that one can never see.
My choices would be...
Raising Abel by W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear (it was a book that was assigned for one of my college classes. Though most probably hated it in class... I loved it! Kept the book and suggest others to read it. Even all those bible thumpers out there)
The Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (this one not completely why... I just like it. There is something about it)
Those are my choices. I wish I could add more than two. I hate having to narrow it down to just two.

*rolls eyes at people who put "The Bible"* Sheesh. I used to be one of you, so I *know* what you are doing. *rolls eyes again* While, granted, there're a lot of GREAT stories in the Bible, and you are all within your rights to put that answer, GIMME A BREAK! I think it's more interesting to list your two favorite NOVELS, which requires a little more thought than just acting like a sheep. *Baaaaaaaa*
Here are mine:
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
I think these two books are about as perfect as novels go, and represent the greater part of what the 20th century was all about. I know there are more books I could list, but these are my personal 20th century favorites.

There is no way I can decide. Something like, a book in The Chronicles of Narnia and Eragon.
