Germany invaded Poland in Sept. 1939. Britain and France had a treaty of alliance with Poland. On this invasion, France and Britain declared war on Germany. There resulted the so-called phoney war of 1940, in which the French and British remained on the ready, but did not attack. In 1940, Germany launched a Blitzkrieg against France, which resulted in the conquest of France within days. The few British soldiers were evacuated back to Britain from Dunkirk.
Americans did not see the reason to get involved with European wars. But Hitler had signed a treaty with Japan. On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. That meant that we were at war not only with Japan, but with the two other AXIS allies, Germany and Italy (Mussolini).

I was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. Then I fought all the way across Europe in the infantry, so I know war pretty darn well, first hand. Whenever anyone criticizes anything the army does, he should have some background in fighting a war. Things move fast. Life means little. Your own life could be taken in a second. You don't have time to examine targets. Hesitate, and you're dead. Sure mistakes are made, by both sides. Many more mistakes are made by Americans, because there are many many times more Americans there than any other group. Don't judge if you haven't had equal experience. I would like to have known your granddad. I had great respect for the British fighters. I never knew a British or an American soldier who didn't fight until it was utterly hopeless before becoming a prisoner. The Germans often surrendered when they could easily have fought their way out. Yes Pearl Harbor was the point that we entered the war, but many hundreds of Americans were in Canadian uniforms long before. Uncountable tons of American food and war supplies were sent to England before we got in. I won't comment on the movies you mentioned, because I didn't see them. I don't like war movies because I spot too many exaggerations and mistakes.

Adolf Hitler's aggression led directly to World War Two. America had 'no stake' in the war in Europe. America's territory was not directly threatened. American ships and Americans taking passage on ships across the Atlantic were threatened and ships & passengers were lost but Isolationists in America argued against involvement.
Great Britain and France were willing to let Adolf Hitler & Germany chew up central Europe - - - not objecting when Germany annexed Austria, approving & abetting Germanies' seizure of the Sudetanland, not objecting when Germany swallowed the rest of Czeckoslovakia. When Germany attacked Poland, well yes Britain and France declared War and there were clashes at Sea, but still no 'War.' But Hitler wanted to punnish France & Britain for Germany's losing World War One, and instead of going East and fulfilling his own stated goal of obtaining 'lebenstrassen' / living room bt fighting Bolshevik Russia, Hitler launched attacks against Denmark and Norway and then Holland, Belgium and France. That truly got the war under way.
America might never have gotten involved in Europe. Hitler declared War against America after Pearl Harbor even though his pact with Japan could have been ignored. America having been attacked by Japan might have held back declaring War against Germany and Austria but no Hitler Declared War and no one could object to America's descision to fight Hitler & Company.
Peace....

Specifically the Invasion of Poland by Germany in September 1939. The US was very isolationist at that time. Roosevelt had won the election on the promise that no American soldiers would ever die on foreign soil.
