Sex is probably the main reason but in different situations there could be other reasons.....marriage not working...boredom...just the thrill...even revenge....we could discuss this for a long time.

When some people cheat they do it for the sex either because the person they are with doesn't do the job the right way or doesn't offer certain things in the bedroom. But for other people who cheat they do so because there is something missing in terms of emotional as well as mental needs not being met. And in some cases people want to have their cake and eat it too or because they want to get even on their spouse or person that they are dating.

I think there is more than sex that drives someone to another person . The person could be a downright sourpuss with drives people away by their negative attitude. There are people looking for intelligent repartee and one thing leads to another and sex occurs because a connection on one level has been made. Some people are naturally dissatisfied with what they have and they crave for more ,whether it be money, possessions or sexual gratification. Yes there is more than sex that usually causes one to cheat but there are a select few who have every thing they desire but are looking for a person for the sake of satisfying a sexual fanasy od desire that the one they are with cannot fulfill.

I obviously have to say this until I'm blue in the face (and no, I'm not a Pict - I'll bet only atheists even know what that is...) The diversity of atheist thought is as broad as the number of personal beliefs or interpretations of any religion. Some simply never knew a belief. People like me, were raised with belief, but knowingly renounce church doctrine (that is what makes me a heretic). I do believe in a god, therefore, I am not an atheist - I just don't accept the Judeo-Christian god or it's dogma. I am not agnostic, for the same reason; I believe there is a god, I just think that man, so far, lacks the intellect to understand what "god" is. I don't question if there is a god - I just think that every one is wrong and that we have not evolved as a race, to understand what it is. We are all stupid - yes, I include myself in that statement. I will write my answer as an atheist, because I identify with that label, more than any other, and I am here to defend the right NOT to believe. As for NOT claiming a "god" to justify sin? - You are so off base - it is not even funny. Atheists are accountable to no higher power, we are accountable only to the cause and effect of our actions. If we hurt someone in this world, we have to deal directly with the consequence (as do you). We cannot "sin", knowing that all will be forgiven if we repent - we live in "this world", forgiveness only comes if we earn it from those we have transgressed against, it is pay-as-you-go! Not to be harsh here (okay, I do mean to be harsh - I was just trying to be polite...). You need to work on your English, first of all, you essentially ask the same question twice. You also put the following words together in each question "try and escape" - do you mean "try to escape"? I'm just saying, because "try and escape" would imply we would try to commit sin, then escape once we were successful... This is a pattern that I notice with many religious people (not all), they lack the intellect for free thinking; they lack the bravery to question what they have been taught (lies - many are "sheeple") - and most of all, they lack understanding and tolerance, which is something that Christ attempted to teach (or should I say "try and teached" to make you understand?) - Fourthly, many can't spell well and practice bad grammar. I will end with this, speaking for myself, and not all atheists: I REJECT YOUR GOD, BECAUSE YOUR GOD IS WRONG!!!"

I think it's because they are looking for something. Like lots of woman get cheated on after having a baby. The woman is ignoring everyone but the baby. The man is looking for attention...Mostly attention..... Something new in the sense that life has gotten boring and nothing new is happening. A rush...

Personally, I feel men are more likely to cheat for sex to prove themselves physically attractive/virile and maybe if the opportunity presents itself because 'they can'. A woman is more likely to cheat after feeling emotionally neglected or badly treated by her partner. What I'm trying to say (badly!) is that a man is more likely to do it for physical reasons, a woman for emotional reasons (just my opinion)

Depends on the situation. Some cheat to escape their ho-hum life. Others cheat as some act of revenge. But most cases it's probably for sexual gratification.

As a distraction to other problems
Revenge (If someone has cheated on you)

Other than that I've no idea as I've never been in that situation!

When I did it in my 20's and 30's it was an ego thing.

some people don't get the emotional attention they need at home, so they look elsewhere for it, and it usually ends up in sex anyway.
