I don't get it....I see people at the mall with everything hanging out and it just looks so trashy. Why is this so prevalent in our society? What are they trying to prove?

Because they wanna impress men. That's the only reason. They may give answers like 'we want to show how independent we are' but thats bull crap. They wanna impress men, get their attention and then show off to everyone how 'sexy' they are.....and then maybe get pregnant.

There's two possible answers that I can think of. Firstly, they believe (often wrongly) that it makes them look good. Secondly, all their friends do it and they feel that they should follow the trend. I personally don't fully agree with trends. One of my mottos is "Why follow the flock when you can be the Shepherd?"
EDIT: There is a third possibility, and that is that sadly there are enough males in this world that actually find it attractive. Personally I think that, until you get to know the girl and are in a loving relationship strong enough that you wouldn't even be put off if she suddenly revealed she had a second head in her stomach area, it's much more fun to have some things left to the imagination.

It starts in the media & spreads onto our society. The line between sexy & trashy is not being emphazised in the media, hence they are the trend setters of not only the nation, but beyond.

They are trying to show off something they don't have. They don't get it, somebody should by them a brain while they are a the mall.

they're obviously trying to get the guys to look at them, but sometimes they're probs not looking at them in the way they hope, if you dress like that you make yourself look easy.

because unfortunatly the society we live in makes shallow women and young girls believe that the only way they can be accepted and "liked" is by dressing like a slut
