It marks the beginning of direct backlash against the ruling class. It's one thing for America to reject the rule of England, but quite another to imprison and behead your leaders. The French Revolution marks the beginning of the decline of monarchy with actual power.

Because some one could have used them to form a counterrevolutionary party. When they were still in France in 1789, there was a thought to let them live. Once they were caught trying to escape, the Committee of Public Safety knew that they had to try and execute the royal family or be killed themselves.

The same thing happened when Lenin gave the order to kill the Tsar and his family. There must be no one left to overturn the revolution.
