they were like, wooden beads with chinese charactres painted on them...how long ago were those popular?

Well the actual ethnic/religous ones probably will never go out of style. The cheap-o ones sold at Target, Walmart, etc. those wre really popular during about 1999-2003. I remember my neighbor's daughter wore about 10 of those on both arms, everyday.

I remember them. I believe they were made from Mahjong tiles. Some wery very old and very expensive. The newer, plastic ones were quite affordable.

nothing really goes out of style but I think in the late 90's
but hold on to them, they sound cute

I remember what those were!!! They were big in 1997-2003 ish.
