Encyclopedia Titanica says : "the equally fictitious first class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet)."
"Mr Jack Dawson" : http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/biography/2832/
But there was a real J. Dawson, but he wasn't called Jack and he wasn't a passenger :
"The stone at Fairview Lawn cemetery in Nova Scotia bears the number 227, the date of the epoch-making disaster, and the terse inscription of a name: "J. Dawson." For years it was just another name, a headstone and a footnote. [...] The nondescript body fished from the sea by the Mackay-Bennett and buried in Canadian clay on May 8, 1912, was now a "somebody." [...] J. Dawson was a trimmer, a stokehold slave who channelled coal to the firemen at the furnaces, all the time keeping the black mountains on a level plateau, so that no imbalances were caused to threaten the trim, or even-keel of the ship. [...] Jack Dawson never did exist. But Joseph Dawson [did]."

Sorry, but rose is not a real character, she was made for the movie. There was an engineer named jack dawson, in real life on the titanic, but he stayed at the engines until the sinking.

No both Rose and Jack are fictional characters. However their stories and characters were probably based off the of lives of actual people who were on the Titanic.

rose was not. she was a ficticious character created by the writer/director. jack dawson was on the boat, but he was not a passenger, but instead worked as an engineer by the engines. he was trapped inside the coal burning room (one of the rooms you see in the movie, where they throw coal into chambers to power the ship) and he died there. he never fell in love with any girl on the ship, because he never went and conversed with them. besides, the voyage was only like 4 or 5 days long - not long enough for anyone to meet, hate each other, then he saves her, then they fall in love. sadly, it is historical fiction. makes a great story though
