How do i install a Dell Wireless 1450 adapter onto my mac.?

I am running os 9. but i can upgrade if i need to

I dont recall seeing a Mac driver for this even if you upgrade to OSX.

You don't HAVE to, but in my humble opinion, you should just buy all of them at the same time (router and wireless card). Go with Linksys for both. You could get a card and hope to pick up a signal. But with a wireless router and no card, the laptop will need a direct connection (wired) or there will not be an internet connection for the laptop.

You don't Macs can only use Airport.
