AntiVirus:
If you want a free antivirus, I recommend Avast. It puts a lot of focus on preventing malware from getting on your computer in the first place. For pay, I recommend Kaspersky which has many times been labeled the top-of-the-line antivirus.

Firewall:
If you want a free firewall, I recommend Comodo Firewall. It has been rated the top firewall whether pay or free against leak tests. If you feel you must pay for an firewall, I recommend Zone Alarm Pro. A high class firewall that still stresses ease of use.

there is no silver bullet to make you safe. do some searching and reading and see what other people are saying. look for software thats got a good track record, easy to install and remove, normally paid software is always better then free. aol, nortons, and mcafee are all good, but very hard to remove.
