If you have an epidural you do (otherwise you might pee on yourself).

You only have to get catherized when you're in labor and you have an epidural. This is due to the fact that your whole bottom half is numb - both inside and out. You will not be able to feel yourself wanting to pee. Your pee will go into the catherer when you do go.

If you have an epidural, you probably will need to be catheterized, since you will be pretty much helpless with regards to anything that happens to your body.
If you take an active role in your labor, you will be out of bed walking, in the shower or tub, etc, and you can certainly go to the bathroom on your own as often as you like.
However --
Sometimes in second stage it is hard to pee, and a full bladder can impede the descent of the baby.
Sometimes after the birth a full bladder can prevent the uterus from contracting and you could hemorrhage.
So if your doctor or midwife wants to catheterize you ask why, but don't refuse. (Yes, it's your right to refuse "no matter what they say" -- it's just not very smart.) It is a simple procedure that can sometimes prevent some serious complications.

It depends on several factors. First babies take longer, so some doctors go ahead and do this. Some wait until labor has continued on for several hours. If there has been a history of bladder problems or infections, they might do that. When you have an epidural, they have to do that. The doctor does not want your bladder to burst or become infected. Done correctly, the catheter is not a big deal.

Most hospitals with if you have an epidural. Since you probably won't be able to feel if you have to go. Some will come in and do it periodically, but usually they will if you have an epidural.

If you get an epidural. It doesn't hurt. In fact it's great lol. My epidrual didn't work... but I still didn't have to worry about going to the bathroom. They took it out when I was ready to push bubs out.

I had an epidural while I was in labor and my doctor never catheterized me. If you have a C-section they may be more apt to catheterize you. It all depends on the doctor and what he/she usually does.

No. I never was. I had natural childbirth twice. I don't know about C- sections though...maybe they do it ?? But if they do, you will be numb from the waist down and not feel it. So don't worry too much.

Only if you have an epidural because it makes everything from the waist down numb...they do not want you falling and hurting yourself.

No, but if you have an epidural or C-section you will.
The good news is that you won't feel it in either of those cases.
Best wishes!
