No. I believe just the opposite. Today, primarily due to the low quality of public education, people are far too quick to latch on to any misstep America makes and start their condescending criticism. We are becoming a country full of self-hating fault finders. Well, let me tell you one thing I have discovered in my long life. Fault finding is the most common form of unskilled labor.
Most Americans don't seem to realize that WE THE PEOPLE are the government. That this is the greatest country on earth due to the brilliant founding fathers that created the finest system of governance since the world began.
To be a patriot, you must love your country the same way you love your own family. You don't disrespect your own family members just because they do something you don't like. You work with them and try to set them straight. If you love them you never give up on them. You always defend them and would lay down your life for them. That is how it is when you are a patriot.
You certainly don't run around calling the President a Chimp or an idiot. You don't have to agree with his policies but you need not hate the man. Among patriots, there can only be two sides, the loyal supporters and the loyal opposition. Read the remarks of some of the people in this forum regarding the president. Do they sound like patriotic members of the loyal opposition? Or do they sound like anti-
American zealots?
There is no such thing as blindly patriotic. You either support your country's position or oppose your countries position but you must be loyal to the Constitution of the United States of America. You must be willing to stand up for the National Anthem regardless of who the president is or what party controls what. You must be willing to pledge your allegiance to the United States. If you refuse to pledge your allegiance that means you have no allegiance and that means you are not patriotic.
Don't let the socialists and their useful idiots fool you. Patriotism does not mean destroying the foundation, building blocks or fabric of our society. Loyal opponents do not pass legislation trying to seize power the Constitution grants the Commander-in-Chief.
I hope this little epistle of mine makes you think.

Amen to that. Our country is here precisely because our Founding Fathers did not have a blind view of patriotism and were willing to tell their sovereign to please go away when George III wasn't inclined to honor the rights of his subjects in the Americas. That generation, one that could well lay claim to the Greatest Generation label my father's generation grabbed this past century, would be appalled that our citizens aren't more vocal about what's been going on and would never have viewed themselves as beyond fault. Look, they put the Articles of Confederation in for 13 years before the Constitution took effect and that's a terrible organizational scheme. They weren't perfect!

It is amazing, how we are told the world hates America. Then when something happens somewhere in the world they call on the USA to help. Then once the situation is over they hate us again.
The American people love this country for our freedoms, We have protected many countries when called upon, and we ask for nothing in return.
When we have immigrants come into this country (the right way ) they want to become Americans, not like the one who hop fences and wave THEIR flags and demand rights they are not entitled to.

yes they are. there are many people who still support the president and his administration even though they were so clearly wrong about the Weapons of Mass Destruction. And also after the world discovered there were no weapons why do we still remain in Iraq? Why are there so little troops in afghanistan where the terrorists who attacked us actually are?
even after all of these things, enough people blindly believe in the government that we cannot impeach.

You are 100% RIGHT! As Samuel Johnson said in the 1770s: "In every patriot a scoundrel". We USA citizens, I dislike using the term "American", refuse to grow up. Germany the people were also "blindly" patriotic and look how they ended in 1945: smoldering ruins. Wake up yanks and smell the coffee before is too late!

Wow- this is what is scaring me about what citizens think about this country and remember about this country-
Being patriotic, is having pride in your country- Remembering the bad things that we have done, has helped shaped this country what it is today... Mistakes that we are currently making hopefully will shape this country for what it will be tomorrow.. no country is perfect, that doesn't mean you can't have pride in your country, remember the heroes, remember the past, know what is going on in the present.

I have to disagree--that's true of only a tiny minority.
What you are seeing is a fring group--the right-wing extremists and pseudo-Christian fundamentalist cults--that blind follow Bush. That's an entirely different thing. Particularly since these groups are open in their intent to destroy the Constitution--that hardly makes tem "patriotic" in any sense of the word.

Yes. Too many Americans choose to believe in a fantasy about our nation and its greatness that is disrespectful to the reality of the American Dream.
