To be honest, I think it's a little stupid as to why it's not legal here. But then again, you can see the reasons why it isn't. The Catholic church still has a huge reign on how the Irish government and society think. Most of us were brought up Catholic and while we may not go to mass anymore, we still believe in many of the core values such as the act of killing an unborn child to be wrong.
However, considering that anyone who wants an abortion enough can just fly/take a ferry across to the UK to get one, it seems rather pathetic that they won't just give in and let it happen here. Cause as was proved recently in the MissD case, you can't prevent someone travelling for one.

It should be legal anywhere, I'm all for freedom of choice. Sometimes accidents happen. No point forcing someone to be a parent who doesn't want to be one - imagine one million psychologically damaged unwanted children running around, not a good move.
If you look at the US, when abortion became legalised state by state, the crime rate fell 20 years down the line in states where abortion was first legalised. This is because there were less unwanted children being born, those types of kids are more likely to get into a life of crime.
To be overly compassionate and say "killing is wrong" in this debate is just too short sighted.

Is a very difficult question. As a Catholic, I oppose abortion, but as a socialist who believes in equality, I find I must support it to some degree.

Ideally, all forms of birth control should be readily available, so women do not have to resort to it. And ideally, sex should not be seen as a recreational activity by males or females - but as something between committed couples. That being said, I think that as soon as a fetus can live outside the mother, at that point abortion should not longer be allowed, except in the case of rape, incest or threat to the mother's health.

Really more of a matter for the Irish...

I do think abortion should be legal, but I am too much of a moral coward to come out and say it should be freely available.

No abortion is unlawful in eire. there have been some referenda in this project and it continues to be unlawful. the government can't make it criminal and not using a referendum to alter the form.

Yes I'm pro-choice.It's daft that it's illegal.Anyone who wants one just gets a cheap ferry trip to the UK and has 1!

I'm from the UK not Eire though so not really my business.

I think that's for the Irish to decide for themselves.Just as I think each individual state in America should have the right. I'm not for Roe V. Wade but only because it abrogates states rights. If New York wants abortion but utah doesn't shouldn't they be able to decide for themselves like we do with the death penalty et alia. Why do we treat this different? I genuinely do not understand the reasoning behind this.

I do believe it should be legal in Ireland....and every where else.
I believe it is an individual's choice...but I think it should be legal so that it can be safe and monitored.
