I recently finished off a pack of pills. After the first week of taking them, my period came. After it stopped, I resumed taking the remaining two weeks of pills. I was supposed to start at the beginning of this past week, but didn't. I took a home pregnancy test lastnight, and it came out positive, in a very quick way. I'm just wondering how common is it to get pregnant while taking the pill?

Let me straighten this out really quick. #1-I know the proper way to take the pill. I've been taking them for the past 2 years since my first son was born. #2-This isn't the result of some random sex act. It was between my husband and I, so please spare the condom(I'm allergic to them anyway) and STD remarks. I'm not a complete idiot, I just wanted to ask and get some info that may not be mainstream. Thank you.

I wasn't regular taking my pill like I was supposed to be and I got pregnant. You should have taken the pills even if your period came -

Yes i got pregnant whilst taking the pill and i took it at the same time every day and it annoys me when people say that you can't, just because it hasn't happened to them doesn't mean it can't happen. The pill is only 97-99% effective (depending on brand) and this reduces if you have drank quite a bit of alcohol, had a cold, the flu or a stomach bug, even certain medicine can cancel out the effect of the pill. Also some women end up taking the wrong pill for there body.

If your period truly came a week after you started taking the pills, then you started taking them at the wrong time. Usually a woman will experience what is called break through bleeding during the first month or so, and it looks like it's a period. If taken correctly, the pill is very effective. Most pills are taken day after day, and if you stopped taking them, then you very well could be pregnant. Make an appointment with your doctor so another test can be taken. If you're not pregnant, ask your doctor the proper way to take your pills so you won't have to go through this again. Though instructions should have been given to you and there should be instructions on your prescription. The pills I'm on cause me to have a period only 4 times a year. They are coming out with one that will stop your period completely. I think it's in June or July.

Well, even after you start taking the pill, it can take up to 4-6 weeks before it is really effective. The doctor should have told you that, and should have told you to use back up protection during that window.
It's also possible that you are one of lucky (or would that be unlucky?) women that the pill doesn't work for.
Antibiotics will make the pill not work the way it is supposed to, so if you were one antibiotics, that could be why.
Also, if you were taking the pill, and then decided that you didn't want your period after the pack, started a new pack, and then didn't take them for a week, that can effect how they work also.
I got pregnant while on the mini-pill. My baby was only almost 7 months old, but I think I'm one of the lucky (?) ones that it doesn't work for. It happens more then most people know!!!

The pill is around 98% effective, so your chances are 2% (2 out of 100). Not bad odds. What usually happens is the woman misses one pill, and that is all it takes, or they think after taking them for one day they are covered when it takes a few weeks to change their system.
A few meds also can alter the effectiveness of the pill, and your doctor should have told them to you.
In the future, if you really don't want to get pregnant, there is nothing wrong with using double protection (i.e. a condom AND the pill) plus it also protects you from STD's.

I became pregnant with my now 7 month old son Nigel. I was taking my pill every day same time. I had at the time protein deficiency S which was the cause of the pill not working effectively. I went to the doctor's on the 17 of February last year and found out I was 10 weeks pregnant already.

I have been pregnant twice, once was a miscarriage and the second is currently both times I was on the pill. I miss very rarely and always took the pill the next day if I did. I've heard of others getting pregnant this way also. The pill has a 99.9% rate of preventing pregnancy so I guess there's always a chance.

It looks like you may be pregnant! False positives are rare. As for the likeliness of getting pregnant on the pill...all my moms kids accept for one were not planned and she got pregnant on the pill every time. I mean so it is possible. Hope things turn out how you want!!

Your period is not supposed to come after the first week of pills, it comes on the last week. You must not have started them when you are supposed to, so they weren't effective. They are 99% effective when taken the correct way.

Very possible. Since you had a positive home pregnancy test, I wouldn't take anymore pills.
