I just got a new laptop and I don't know how to connect it to the internet...I've read that I need to get a wireless router, where do I get one and about how much does it cost? And is that the only way to connect to the internet on a laptop?

Thanx for all your help! =]

If you want to go wireless anywhere in the house with no cords connected then you need a wireless router. They can be anywhere from $30-100+; Linksys is a very good brand. If you can't afford one, you just need a ethernet cable to plug in the back from your cable box (or router if you have more then 1 computer connected to the internet.) You can find any of these supplies at your local office supply store/computer store such as Staples or RadioShack.

You can already use your notebook at your friends or a coffee shop. If you want your own wifi, you need to have internet in the home, then buy a wireless router read the directions ( hook up a cable, run a cd and unhook) and just log on. Cost for a router is about 50.

I am assuming that you already have DSL SERVICE and DSL MODEM from your provider.

The other things you need is:

1. Wireless router to transmit the signal through the airwaves for your laptop to pick up. (I have a Belkin wireless router that runs around $30 and it turns out it has a lifetime warranty). You will be plugging in the DSL MODEM (provided by your internet provider) to the WIRELESS ROUTER via ethernet cable, which is usually provided with the router.

2. Wireless adapter for the laptop to be able to access this signal sent by the WIRELESS ROUTER. Most laptop computers have a built-in wireless adapter, so you might not need to get one. If you have a buil-in wifi adapter and you cannot connect, make sure it's turn on. If you don't have a wifi adapter on your laptop you have to get one. They come either in PCMCIA format that your just slide into your laptop, or the USB format, which you just plug into your usb port. Those run around $40 each.

Once you set up your wireless router, refer to your router's manual to turn on the security features if you want to keep other people off your wireless connection, unless you don't mind sharing your wireless conection with strangers, but keep in mind that your connection speed will be compromised then. Before i set up security on my wi-fi connection 6 of my neighbors were on my conecction and slowed me down to dial-up speeds, so watch out!!

I hope this is the information you were looking for!

Wireless is an add-on. You first need a direct wired internet connection, either DSL or Cable. You most likely already have it, if you use a desktop to connect to the internet. Once you have the direct wired connection, you can either directly connect your laptop to it or connect a rooter to it, and then connect your laptop to the rooter. One purpose of a rooter is to allow many computers to connect to the internet. If you have a desktop and a laptop and want both of them to be connected at the same time, you need a rooter. Some rooters provide wireless connections.

I have the same problem..I have built-in wireless, so there's no card slot, cing says get an adaptor, where's the adaptor, nobody knows...i needs to be mobile with my laptop. So, if you hear of any thing let me know, and the same here. There are a few types of routers at best buy and office depot, walmart as well I've seen. Prices vary on the type of router needed.

If you don't want to have a wireless network or pay for router then you should connect your laptop with your modem. I don't know where you put your modem but once you put it in the living room then you have to bring you laptop to there and connect it to internet hehehe

you would have to buy the wireles router from any pc store like staples or bestbuy they can run anywhere from $50 on up but the best one to get would be a linksys wireless-g router, the other way to connect to the net would be dial up like aol plug in the phone line
