You should take a class to learn how to sew something simple. Fabric stores sometimes give classes. You can also choose a pattern at the local fabric store. choose something easy like elastisized shorts. If you choose something difficult you could be discouraged! If you need help you can always ask on this web site or on answers.com. Some guys do sew! There is nothing wrong with that! I'd help you.
A book I own which is very good is "Readers digest book "Complete guide to sewing". I used it when I made a tailored jacket and bustier.
Good luck!

I agree with Love2smile. I've been sewing clothes for years, and have picked up tons of tips and techniques from books, but only after getting the basics first in a class. It is really worth it to take a basic sewing class with an in-person instructor when you're beginning.

If you go to a fabric store, ask a clerk to show you how to use the pattern books. Find some that are designated "learn to sew." Unlike most of the others, they do not assume your vast knowledge of sewing. They take you through a step-by-step process and explain everything very clearly. Simplicity (a brand of pattern) has some good ones. Get something simple and useful to start with. They have things like totebags or even simple pullover shirts in the "learn to sew" stuff. Get a pattern that looks like you can manage it. If it's something you yourself won't use, be sure to get your fabric in someone else's favorite color and give it as a present. Once you've mastered the basics, go on to other patterns that say "easy" on them. You shouldn't start with those, though, because they do assume some knowledge.

Most importantly, don't give up if you don't succeed by tomorrow or even next week. Skills that are worthwhile really do take time to learn AND to master. Practice, practice, practice!

I can email you simple instructions for pillows, once you've done one or two "learn to sew" patterns. I also have good instructions for totebags. I design and sew most of my own clothing, and have done for years, but it took me a long time to get to that point. Keep at it and don't give up.

have someone who knows how to sew teach you how first. People who know how to sew, don't seem to write good instructions. They are always too hard to understand, but relatively simple to do. ask at a fabric store how to find someone to help you.

there might be some good videos though, try your library.

can't learn from a book -
if you buy a sewing machine - you get intro lesson
check with your local joanns/parks & rec/ or whatever fabric store is in your area for class references

The biggest reason for taking a class is that the machine will do something and you won't know how to fix it. So find a class! Your local adult ed will probably have a night course.
