No, is the simple answer, the reason you throw salt over your shoulder is it is supposed to go into the eyes of the devil thus giving you the time to escape his clutches, this dates from the time when salt thrown into an open fire was supposed to make demons appear in the flames?? and along the way as with all things the true meaning has been lost.

No.

In fact tossing it over your left shoulder was meant to ward off bad luck.

Something about throwing it in the face of demons - who hang around behind you left shoulder for some curious reason. This was done traditionally if you spilled some salt.

Truth is salt was such a valuable commodity it was deemed unlucky to spill it (LOL, so wasting more should put it all right I don't know).

It will bring neither for in that day and time and ancient mankind thought that since salt was a giver of life so to speak or better still a life saver mankind thought that spilling salt was evil rather then an simple accident ok and then they made up a superstition that you spill salt you should throw it over over your left shoulder and that ment you were throwing death in their version of the devil face ok...................... that all is was based on.......................................................... In those days salt was very expensive and should not be wasted and that is all it basiclly was a man made superstition.....

No, quite the reverse.

Supposedly we have a demon on our left shoulder and an angel on the right.

By throwing salt over your left shoulder, you see off the demon - if only temporarily.

Just try to make sure you don't throw it over your right one by mistake though ;-)

I don't believe in all those silly superstitions. To prove it I some times purposely walk under ladders when I see one. A complete load of bloody nonsense. Nothing bad has happened as a consequence of walking under a ladder yet, and I've done it many times.

Superstition is meant to generate fear for the masses. Those creating the supersitions hope the masses will forget they can think for themselves as they become consumed with the fear.

I choose not to live in fear.
