Crayfish, often referred to as crawfish or crawdad, are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, to which they are closely related. They breathe through gills and are found in bodies of fresh water that do not freeze to the bottom; they are also mostly found in brooks and streams where there is fresh water running, and which have shelter against predators. Most crayfish cannot tolerate polluted water, although some species such as the invasive Procambarus clarkii are more hardy. Some crayfish have been found living as much as 3 m (10 feet) underground.

True shrimp are swimming, decapod crustaceans classified in the infraorder Caridea, found widely around the world in both fresh and salt water.

Prawns are distinguished from the superficially similar shrimp by the gill structure which is branching in prawns (hence the name, dendro="tree"; branchia="gill"), but is lamellar in shrimp. The sister taxon to Dendrobranchiata is Pleocyemata, which contains all the true shrimp, crabs, lobsters, etc.

Prawns and shrimps are the same thing. What are called shrimp in the USA are called prawns in Australia. In the UK, small species are called shrimps and larger ones are called prawns. Crayfish usually cover a group of both fresh and saltwater crustaceae which are larger than prawns and include lobsters. In some parts of the world "lobster" and "crayfish" are interchangeable. Scampi are classed as prawns by some people, crayfish by others. The boundaries are not determined, just go with local usage.
