The phrase young and stupid comes to mind.
As children we have no ability to appreciate how busy, difficult and challenging every day life can be.

Sadly, I have no dream life, there are way too many things out of my control, so I spend no time worrying about it. I enjoy the moment for what it is ad that is enough for me. Craving something different is bad for the soul (says every major religion).

No, when I was young, I didn't know about real life things like mental illness (I married someone with it, it turns out). I thought I would be more able to set my own course, not understanding that if I wanted to be partnered, which I did and do, the sacrifices might be huge.

The answer has been to adapt and compromise. Not my favorite thing, but the right and mature thing to do.

Not even close.

As to why, sometimes life happens to us and takes into directions that we wouldn't have anticipated or planned for.

The type of ambition of following a dream though is very close to greed. In our youth we connect happiness to objects. As we age, we understand how happiness is created and sabotaged.

A person who learns to quiet their mind in their youth will have many more years of happiness.

You know what, its much better.
I put my naive, "Dreams" away years ago and savor life as it IS and the world is a much better place.
