I have a 3ft tank it has gravel and plants in it at the momment but i am thinking of revoming the gravel for good, just keeping a bare tank with a pump heater and air stone, And a few bushy plants, I want to keep it bare so it will be easyer to keep clean because it will be slightly overstocked (And would it be ok to do a 10% water change everyday or is this too much, What do you suggest), It wont be a display/show tank it is just for rearing guppies in So would it be ok or do fish need gravel?

A bare bottom tank is perfect for a grow out tank for guppies. I never keep gravel in any of my grow out tanks, guppies or other fish. Just place something dark under the bottom of the tank so they will feel more comfortable. I would suggest a sponge filter and as they grow a small power filter for the tank.

A 10% water change per day is ok, but 25% or more would be even better. The young fish need extra clean water to grow well and if you feed live foods the water will get dirt very quickly. In addition to that the babies release chemicals into the water that prevent good growth and you need to keep that chemical down as well.

I had my fish without anything before, and they were fine. Now they have rocks, and it looks nice. Sometimes you dont need to be changing the water all the time, i have a really good pump and it keeps the water clean.

Hello...No they don't need gravel & YES water change is not neccessary every day, more like every week is good, but they all need filtered & treated water to eliminate chlorine, so you use conditioner or water that has been left standing for @ least 24 hours !! Take Care :)

I wouldnt say they NEED gravel, but it looks better and debris will be hidden under rocks. Also, it provides an area to rest and also some fish eat algae and other things off the rocks. I would say go with rocks.

I have tried it before and it looks pretty good at first but every little speck of dirt will show up in bare spots. I have seen alot of people pull it off though and make it look really nice.

Fish don't need gravel.

Some fish like to dig in the gravel, though...
