Both.
What once was is coming to an end. The world appears to be changing and quite dramatically. At the same time, the new types of societies are beginning to emerge. The nuclear family is a thing of the past, for example, and many new conglomerations of how people live (together and apart) have begun to form.

I'd like to think the human species is at the beginning of the end of an old era. Or perhaps at the end of the beginning of a new one.
As for the whole world... well, it's not coming to either one.

Things can never go back to beginning. You were born and grow old. You can never be a baby again.
It should be the world is coming to an end or another beginning.

I believe that what we are coming to is, not the end of the world, but to the end of an era.
I believe that many more phases of earth's history (salvation history), will occur before the end of the world proper.
We are still millions of years off from the end of the world, as such, as in future and inconceivable ages, things so wonderful and amazing will be revealed to man that we simply have no comprehension of them now.
Realities exist out there and up there that are of such a nature that the normal human mind has no innate ability to process or understand them - but they will be revealed to man and understood by him as God gives the human mind more and more power as time goes on (which is completely at His discretion).

There is no end and although we can speculate, we don't know of the beginning either. We can only judge 'the' end in reference to 'our' end. What I mean is the way you answer this question really determines how you feel about your own mortality. That question is like asking what half of an infinite number is.

This world we live in now will soon be replaced by a new one..one with peace and health..one without sin or death, a perfect world without evil.
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea is no more
And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away
