Hard to tell from the description you give... but probably a few possible canidates:
Are the vents high up in front of the rear wheels, or down lower? If higher, chances are the car is actually a Ruf, as many of their 80s models feature air intakes in this area. If lower down (and covered with black side strakes), this could be an option that was available on the 930 in the mid-late 80s (most often seen on the slant nose 930S, but sometimes seen on the regular 930 as well).
If this is a race car, it could be a 935 (though the overall bodywork would be substantially different from a street 911). And though quite a bit earlier than 1987, both the 911 RSR of the mid 1970s and the 934 both featured large vents on the rear fender flares. As both of these were exceptionally wide in the back due to the extra wide flares, these could be what you are reffering to.

The 930 is the 911 turbo of the years 1976?-1988 (theyre all turbos). There are 2 styles though, the standard and the slant nose.

If it was supposed to be built before 1987 and looks like a 911. Maybe a 911 sc? Does it look like this http://www.terra2imports.ca/import-japan112668012341949.htm

If it has a wide rear end, that is also sort of squarish looking, opposed to rounded, in the rear, with a spoiler, it's a 959.
