If you want to do it the RIGHT way, they will. A clean install will give you much less issues. And you've neverheard of anyone having issues with vista, right?
If you just do the istall, there is a good likely hood that your programs and data will be intact. BUT you've heard the expression garbage in, garbae out, right. MOST of us have junk on our systems. If you just upgrade, there is a high likelyhood that that minor system configuration issue you had will now become very apparent. Most of us have spyware and malware on our computers, whether a spyware program catches it or not. When you upgrade, vista is reacts strongly to bad stuff and your likelyhood of a repeat install is high. And if you have to do a repeat install, all bets are off as to whether your data is safe. Just save yorself frustration, time and effort. Back up your data and do a clean install. MAKE SURE YOU RUN UPGRADE ADVISOR FIRST!!!!!!

There are various options to upgrade to vista. First, you could back up all your data on DVDs or Cd's and then format your hard rive so you can install windows vista. Or you could partition your hard rive (this means to use a special software that would give a new Operating System a specific amount of memory...) lets say that you have 80 Gbs in your computer and you partition your disk to have 60 for windows xp and 20 for windows vista... that way you can have both XP and Vista on your computer... I'd recommend this last one to just try out vista... I use vista and I have compatibility issues with hardware... but if you want to only use windows vista on your computer then you should format your hard rive, which would erase your data.

No, a Vista upgrade preserves your files and installed applications. There are some XP applications that are incompatible with Vista, but they will be blocked by Vista. In particular, the anti-virus software will need to be upgraded after an Vista upgrade. Most drivers should be on the Vista DVD.
You might walso want to try this:
