My friend is saying that the finale ends with the conclusion: they all actually died in the plane crash and "the island" is a bridge between heaven and hell. If they all survive the island they go to heaven. I don't watch Lost much but she said the people that sailed off in the boat are going to heaven. I didn't see this but the people that watch Lost must have. Does anyone know if this is true or just speculation? Does anyone know the reall ending if it is just speculation?

No, this doesn't appear to be true. Many have speculated about the fact that the passengers of flight 815 died or are in purgatory, but the writers/producers have gone on record and said this isn't true. Also, in the finale, we see a flash forward of Jack's character showing that he made it off the island, along with Kate. We still don't know all of the mysteries of the island..but now we know that at least Jack and Kate made it home.

The producers have stated that it is definitely NOT hell. That the survivors are real and not ghosts. It's just a plot point. In fact, the finale even shows them in the future, although at the time you're watching the flashbacks you think you are watching the past, and Jack tells Kate that they never should have left the island.
My theory is that Ben had a duplicate plane made and staged it where ever it was found to look like a crash so no one would look for the survivors. He seems to have unlimited resources and money, though I don't know how.

The ending of Lost from what I understood is this. After Charlie kills himself Sawyer call on a radio walki talki thing. The button goes green and he starts to talk someone. Then they all possibly get rescued. I don't know for sure because the next seen shows Sawyer and Kate meeting at an airplane station. Sawyer starts saying how he doesn't enjoy his life and that he goes on the airplanes to hope that one day they will crash back onto the island since he realized he left the Island for nothing to come back to. Then it ends. Your friend might be right about being a bridge but I don't know. Hope This Helps!

No. The Purgatory theory has already been disproven. The writers of the show even said as much half was through last season. Besides, the season 3 finale showed a flash-forward where Kate and Jack are back in civilization.

i don't think anyone knows the "real" ending yet--ABC has given the writers until 2010 to end the series and they are going to milk it for what it is worth--as long as we keep watching.
but the "dead" and "heaven" theories seem to have been shot down in the season finale this past week.

some revealing facts were shown in the finale, but the story's not finished yet. there's 32 episodes left for season 4 and 5.

and the confusion is like the best part of lost!
