"Watch out for plagiarism. It's a lot easier than you might think, and you don't even have to be conscious you're doing it." ~~ Lamar Memorial Library website
If you avoid deliberate plagiarization, then you don't have to worry about how efficient the checkers are.
Here's a site, courtesy of the Lamar Memorial Library that I found with a discussion about the subject and how to avoid it.

I believe that there's a fine line between originality and plagiarism; many of us aren't even fully aware when we do it. Maybe I'll hear something on the radio or TV and repeat it. Or, I'll use a line from a book or poem I once read and not even be fully cognizant that I have co-opted another person's work.
Many author's draw inspiration from the work of others. For example, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Merton were inspired by "Meditation XVII" of Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, a 1624 metaphysical poem by John Donne.
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
Hemingway wrote, "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and Merton wrote, "No Man is An Island."

Of course they do! But upon condition that you know which checker is reliable:) For me it is Plagiarism detect. Yes, it’s chargeable but it worth spending a few cents for your work being qualitatively checked. Furthermore, it’s cheaper than the others and service provided is better.
P.S. It's cheap. Believe me, 'cause I'm a student and I value money))))))

I'm in college and I've seen many classmates get caught by plagerism checkers. But, the ones that my professers usually use aren't just online. They pay for them.

Well, I can name checker which really works and does it perfectly. It is plagiarism detect. I tested really lots of services but this one is the best. When I was looking for plagiarism checker I wanted to save money and used free checkers. They are totally not safe. Because my works were copied and uploaded in the internet. Unsuccessfull experiense.( Then, I was looking for chargeable checkers, but some of them were pretty expensive and not quite accurate. But plagiarism detect is not one of those checkers. It scans super accurate (because Google and Bing are official partners of plagiarism detect, which allows to check work through billions of web-pages all over the Internet) and it has very useful feature - report of checking. I mean that every work you checked has its report of scanning which you can easily print out or email to teacher for instance. link to plagiarism detect http://bit.ly/1lVKbIA

Yep, they do. Students don't believe they do, but when a how-to paper comes up as an 80% match to hgtv.com, it certainly proves a point. Do they catch EVERYTHING, no. A lot more than one would think, yes.

i don't know.... I think it might work best to pick out paragraphs that may have been plagerised, rather than determining if the entire paper is plagerised...
I have my doubts about those things. i think the best guard against plagerism is an aware teacher

absolutely. They don't call you out on everything though, so if you're really clever, you can still get away with it.
