That would defeat the purpose of open source. It's shared code distributed amongst the development community, that no one gets paid for.

He gets paid in several ways. Primarily he is just paid with the feeling of self accomplishment and having helped others.

Also, there is generally a way to donate money to Open Source projects, so programmers will sometimes get a little money that way.

And some OSS websites will have adds which give a little more money.

Then there are some cases where an Open Source project is actually funded partially by a proprietary company. (Such as with OpenOffice.org and Sun Microsystems.)

The programmer gets paid if the business model allows it. Look , all open source means is the source code is open to whoever acquires it. For example, I could sell my OSS product for a million bucks, and that's fine. Or I could give it away for free.

Does a programmer get paid? Depends. Is someone going to pay him? Is his product a commercial product?

Depends. Using Open-Source software doesn't necessarily mean that it is free of charge. Some software developers write OSS programs for a fee, however, they are charged to supply the source-code for the software they are authoring and allow anybody to modify it.

There's not much money in OSS though, as it is with closed-source software.

Actually, he get paid because he customize the open-source software rather than build it.

Open-source software is different from the closed one coz it is free so the library are more extensive and users are harder to configure it. He get paid because he know how to customize it to the business demand

Open source means "free". Programmers do not receive any payment for contributing to open source software.
