I would usually say x1950 for this, but since Drect X 10 is out now, I would say dont get either. The 8600gts is not very powerful, and is overpriced in my opinion. I would suggest going for the 8800gts 320 mb. It isnt too much more than the 8600 but will run circles around it.
Also, if Direct X 10 doesn't effect you at all, defanitly go with the x1950 XT version, which has better power then the pro version.

nvidia have many advantages over the ati graphics, first the 8600gts has pixel and shader model 4.0 and direct x 10,however allthough this is a 8 series card its clock speeds are pretty poor
however the x1950pro is a pixel powerhouse, with a massive 36 pixel pipelines, and a 560mhz core clock and a 1400mhz memory clock this has some real awesome power
for a future proof purchase i would go for the 8600gts,but the future is a long way off,so i recommend you buy the ati x1950pro,reasons for this
1)its clock speeds are extremely fast, and memory speeds are equally fast
2)its 36 pixel pipelines give this card loads of rendering power to add more effects to your games
note:the shear power of this card means this card requires a power supply of at least 450watt,make sure you dont use anything less than this as this may cause damage to your graphics card, even fry it
also this card requires 2 x molex 5v power connectors so make sure you have enough spare connectors, try not to use power splitters as this can give you card false power, use molex connectors straight from your p.s.u
any problems let me know
good luck mate!

I would go with the ATI--When buying a graphics card, also check to see how many pixel pipelines it has--the more the better(faster). Make sure your motherboard is compatible--AGP,PCI< or PCI express.

Get the ATI. It is there best card out there and Nvidia is alright but more subject to failure and overheating.
