Rainclouds are dark becasue of how thick they are. Under normal circumstances a cloud must grow 5,000 feet from it's base in order to be able to have any precipitation. The actual darkness comes from sunlight not being able to shine through the cloud.

because the high concentration of vapor molecules packed together tightly gives it a dark appearance.
