The three division winners, per league, win postseason berths. The fourth berth is given to the "wild card" team, which is the second-place team with the best record. In the event of a tie for second, a playoff game is held (there has never yet been a three-way, or more, but plans exist in case it does someday occur.) The wildcard team gets the #4 seed in the postseason regardless of record, and so never gets home field advantage in the Division and League Championship Series.

The "Wild Card Race" refers to the teams that are not in first place vying for the coveted fourth and final slot into the playoff; the wild card. Since there are 3 divisions in each league, the three first place teams get an automatic playoff appearance. The best team in the entire league, aside from the first place teams, with the best record gets into the playoff. If there's a tie in record a one game playoff ensues. Hope this helps.

Every team that is not in 1st place in their division is a part of the wild card race. The team with the best record out of those non-1st place teams, wins the wild card race, earning them a playoff spot.

i've got faith the Chicago Cubs will make a comeback, win the national League Wild Card, win the national League Championship and then win the international sequence against the Detroit Tigers and their first international sequence in a hundred and one Years.

In baseball, four teams from each league (american and national) make the playoffs. The winners of the three divisions, and then the team with the next-best record that didn't win its division.
