A pig and a dog are very similar. a dog will bark if you have visitors and pig well nothing. They both eat anything you put in front of them. A dog will wonder off when it get older to go explore. A pig stays close to the house. It depends on what you are wanting it for, really.

Depends on your lifestyle, what you want from a pet, the zoning in your residential area (in some potbellies are considered livestock), whether you can find a vet to treat the pig, how much research you've done on potbellies.

Pigs are very smart animals, but at the same time they present unique problems and challenges than dogs. Pigs grow tusks that must be trimmed or removed. They can do serious damage to people once the pig becomes territorial and decides they don't want strangers in their area.

They can be leashed trained, but you have to start REALLY young and even with that, if they decide they don't want to do something, they are EXTREMELY strong and will put up quite a struggle.

They can be taught tricks too, but even though this is fun, its the day to day care that is not normal for them. They are prone to different diseases than dogs and require different vaccinations.

Pigs kept indoors can open lower cabinets and the fridge and will steal food, root up (pull up and make holes in) your carpet, or linoleum or other flooring. They can be litter box trained, but it requires a BIG box because they pee an enormous amount.

Many times pigs that are sold as potbellies do not stay very small - mine grew to be 180 pounds.

Pigs may dig up your garden and plants and some of those may be toxic to them - hence a vet visit. They will eat almost anything - mine ate a battery - another vet visit.

Plus if you move, it may be impossible to find someplace that will allow you to keep your pet pig. Would be easier with a dog.

When they squeal - it is LOUD!!!!!!. And man, you dont want it to step on your foot with it's hoof - TALK ABOUT PAIN!!!!

I don't really recommend it because they are such unique animals and present so many challenges and many times people don't realize the full scope of the animal and later the animals are neglected and sometimes sent to rescues.

Where I work there is a pig, and to be honest with you, I wouldn't want one. She is very loving and gentle, but when she decides she wants to go somewhere, it takes a hell of a lot of strength to stop her. She also poos and pees a LOT, and it smells. She has to be cleaned out and have her large sty hosed down daily, and that's a job that everyone tries to avoid.

I like pigs, but in all honesty, a dog is far easier to keep.

Potbellies make great pets, dogs are man's best friend. I wouldn't trade my dogs for anything.
