If you forget something from your house, why do you make and 'X' in the dirt and spit in it before going back?

I knew a lady from Hazard, Ky. If she left her house and forgot an item, she would always make an 'X' in the dirt and spit in the middle before turning around and going back for the lost item.

What is the history for this superstitious action? Why do you/should you do this? Are there consequences if you don't?

That piece of history come to us via the Irish superstitions and no it never worked...........................................

I have never heard that before. Maybe her house was haunted & she was protecting herself when she was going to re-enter it . Who knows?
