Are leftys still taken in by the romanticism of socialism / communism?

It all sounds so great on paper... birds chirping, everybody working together for the "common good", from one man according to his ability, to another man according to his need, all that jazz. Is this notion still what draws people to this bankrupt philosophy? Ignoring the millions dead and tortured by brutal communists? Why people still insist that all failed communist societies were due solely to "the wrong people in charge"?

See what I mean? Sephiroth says communism is a "perversion". This is code for "the wrong people were in charge". Bankrupt idea, bankrupt supporters.

The Soviet Union was a perversion of socialist ideals. Socialism means economic democracy, not dictatorship. Capitalism is a dictatorship of the wealthy with enough corrupt democracy on the surface to make it look morally legitimate.

Yes, socialism is making a comeback in Latin America and if the gap between rich and poor continues to grow, it's only a matter of time before the ideas show up here again. They already are to some extent:

It certainly sounds great on paper, however, we can see the implications taking place right now around the world, due to Chavez... and his stupidity!

I've never quite understood, why the Liberal party is so closely linked to communism, and nobody seems to care.

I think it goes back to the early 70's when Vietnam was going on, everyone was making it seem as though Nixon put us there... Where as he was trying to clean up the mess left to us by Kennedy and Johnson. Not only the war but they left us strapped with a horrid ecomomy!

So if you happen to be Repulican, keep up the good fight. Keep America going forward. We will overcome, as will America... We do all the time... That's how we roll!

You havea good point. At the same time, one wishes there were some sort of system that could do a better job of insuring that those who can't "win at the rat race" (like the elderly, the disabled, etc.) don't get left behind.

I guess pointing to the ideals of a comunist society gives these people the feeling that there exists some mechanism to ensure that social repsonsibility is carried out. Sadly, the truth is that capitalism is the best of a bunch of bad choices...human beings are really a dysfunctional lot, and you just can't expect too much.
