It is the latest trend. Hardwood in the North and tile in the South. However, until I moved into such a house, I never understood why. With modern flooring and tile, juice does not leave a stain if left overnight (think about the kids), unlike many carpets. If you have kids and/or pets (neither ever wipe their feet or paws), it is a wonderous thing. The amount of dirt, pollen, leaves, fur, etc. you will find near your doors is amazing! It's also disgusting!
And it's also there whether you have carpet, tile, or hardwood flooring. It's just that with tile and flooring, you see it and clean it up instead of unknowingly letting it rot in your house. Finally, modern flooring and tile last longer than carpets.
However, here in the South, we don't get the cold floors in the Winter. I suggest you buy slippers.

I guess most people just prefer hardwood floors now a days. I know here in New Orleans, hard wood floors were able to be saved after Katrina, while carpet obviously wasn't. I personally think hardwoods and tiles look better and take less maintainence.

Yes, many people do prefer hardwood floors. If you are having a home built for you, you can always request carpet if you prefer. It probably won't cost extra. Hardwood tends to cost the builder more than carpet.

Hardwood floors just look nicer. Plus the cleaning is easier. There is no lugging around of a vacuum cleaner.

You will find more hardwood in upscale homes, also in wanna-be homes. Wood is a lot easier to clean that carpet and very seldon are there any stains.

This is not necessarily a trend. The carpeting is being left up to the buyer. Many contractors will install carpeting at a buyer's request.

You are correct. It is a trend. And trends are nationwide and some by area.
Hardwood floors have certainly made a comeback over the last several years.
