Some that come to mind include:

Beverly Cleary - Ramona books and many more. Humorous/coming of age type books.

Lois Lowry - wrote The Giver as well as many others. The Giver is part of a trilogy (don't know that it started out that way) and includes Gathering Blue and messenger.

Eve Bunting - such a variety of books including The Wall (Vietnam Memorial), Fly Away Home and Terrible Things, an allegory to the Holocaust.

Gary Paulsen - large number of books, too, including Hatchet and some sequels, historical fiction and adventure books.

Walter Dean Myers - wrote Hoops and Monster; many others.

Judy Blume - Are You There God? It's Me Margaret and other coming of age tales.

Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary jump to the top of my list of great children's authors. Joining them would be E. B. White, Lloyd Alexander, Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, and L. Frank Baum.
