The logo is a silhouette of Jerry West. I believe they started using it as the logo in the early 80s, after he retired.
Sorry, correction, the logo was used after the 1971 / 72 season.

Its Jerry West and it was used since 1972. I don't know why they chose Jerry West, maybe because he was an all star all 14 years of his career?
