A coworker of mine just bought a betta fish in a small fish bowl to keep on her desk at work. It's pretty cute, and of course now I want one, but I've been doing some research and it looks like that any fish will need at least 2 gallons for them to live humanely, and I think 2 gallons may be too big for my desk. Is this true? Are there any possible alternatives? I checked out the store today and saw a 1 gallon tank that could fit on my desk. I also saw some snails. Could I put a betta in the 1 gallon with a snail for company? Would that be enough room? What about just having only snails in there as pets, like 2 or so? How much water do snails need? I also saw some small water frogs there, too.

Basically the question is, what can I put in a 1 gallon tank that will be happy?

A betta is by far the best choice over all. Whatever tank size you get, please try to get a tank with a filter of some sort and if at all possible a heater as well. These two things will prevent no end of problems and frustrations for you as well as keeping the fish much happier and healthier. Do take a few minutes to surf around a bit to some web sellers of fish supplies. There are a wide variety of shapes in tanks ranging from 2-5 gallons available and you may fine one that will fit your space well and offer you significantly more choices in fish as well a a much better environment for your fish than a 1 gallon tank, even with a filter.

Personally, I think bettas need 2+ gallons each. I wouldn't recommend getting a 1 gallon for a betta, but if it had a filter and a heater, it probably be okay. Here is a tank that would proably work perfect for you http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776904&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030056&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&bmUID=1180280948960&itemNo=3&In=Fish&N=2030056&Ne=2#detail Instead of snails, as his buddy, I would recommend ghost shrimp!!! The reason being is even with just 1 snail, you can end up with hundreds. Trust me, I have a 2 gallon just dedicated for snails only. I would probably get 3 or 4 of them. But if you don't like the shrimp, then he will be fine alone. So this is what I would get
-the tank listed above
-3 or 4 ghost shrimp
-1 male betta
-1 small heater
-gravel, decorations, etc
Good Luck and Hope This Helps!!!! :)

get a betta. a tank may not be as large as you imagine it so you could probably get a 2.5 gal tank so it will be happy
if you can only fit 1 gall on i sugest:

if you can fit 2.5 I sugest:

they both come with full kits so you wont have to worry about getting filter and stuff to fit it If you don't know if there is a petco near you there is a store locator on the site
bettas can be pretty hostile so i dont think you should get more than 1 in the same tank
+ I dont think he will become such great friends with a snail

I agree with Amanda you could just buy a fighting fish from your local fish store and put it in the 1gallon tank you were talking about. A fighting fish is very colorful and beautiful.
