I like the list above, but I would add:
Andrew Clements, (Frindle, The School Story, A Week in the Woods)
Lois Lowry, Anastasia Krupnik series, as well as The Giver and Number the Stars
Mary Downing Hahn, (Wait until Helen Comes, The Gentleman Outlaw & Me -- Eli, A Time for Andrew, A Doll in the Garden)
Margaret Peterson Haddix, Running Out of Time
Carol Ryrie Brink, Caddie Woodlawn
Now you've got a lot of great recommendations!

A great one was George S. MacDonald, a Scot who wrote The Princess and Curdie, The Princess and the Goblin, and many other books. They concerned goblins and dwarfs, treasure buried in mountains, etc. Very well written and imaginative, unlike most modern children's books.
