Frozen Bloodworms or brine shrimp as a treat once in a while ONLY. For their main diet, feed them "Cichlid Pellets". Any of your fish/pet stores will carry fish food specifically formulated for cichlids - this is what they should eat. My cichlids have always loved the Cichlid Pellets. :)

In the wild Electric Yellows are Omnivorous, more toward the carnivorous end of it, eating insects, and crustaceans, and some algae.
In the aquarium they can live off a standard cichlid pellet. Spirulina flakes are a very healthy supplement in addition to this. For fresh foods they can eat foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, thawed frozen peas, spinach or leafy lettuce.
I don't recommend bloodworms for Malawis, or any insect larva or worm. The consistency of it can cause Malawi Bloat, an often fatal digestive disease.

Cichlids carry eggs in their mouths. When they are holding eggs, they can not eat or put anything in their mouths. My guess is she is getting picked on and is trying to make herself a hiding spot. Or maybe she is just digging, Cichlids love to dig. My cichlids would rearrange the whole tank - putting gravel in their mouths and spitting it out, digging deep holes etc. I would keep an eye on her and see if she is getting bullied. Cichlids are aggressive, so I'm sure they bully each other. However, if it is really bad you may have to do some rearranging of your stock.

It depends on what niche the fish is grouped into. Generally speaking they will do well on a staple diet of pellets or flakes but what to add to that depends on your fish. Here's a link to some additional information from which you should be able to tell what your fish will need in it's diet.

Odds are very good your fish will fall into the next to last group on the page, the Eaters of Aufwuchs — i.e., algae growing on rocks, wood, or other surfaces
Hope that helps
