If something cannot be proven, is it then possible to disprove the matter? This goes beyond a simple "well by not being able to prove a matter's existence is in itself the disproof you need". I.e. I say I believe in aliens, for example, someone says there is no proof of their existence, so then how can you prove that they don't exist if you cannot prove that they do exist? (NB aleins are only an example!)

First of all, its a logical impossibility to prove a negative, no matter what subject you're talking about. It just seems rational that one should only believe in things with evidence, to do otherwise is using CAVE MAN logic to explain the universe.

Ok...wow, complex. If you can't prove they exist, then you probably have to find a way to prove that they don't exist. If you can't find a way to show that they don't exist, then the answer remains unknown.

So if I took aliens for the example, and if there wasn't any proof that they exist, that shows that they don't exist, right? But to disprove a disproof, you need proof.

They say proof is in the pudding but as you say, if there is no pudding....

To prove or disprove would required the same information, so with out it is an open case until proven or otherwise.
