Do we ever die... no it is not so... only the body dies! We are a living soul atman that has manifested the body of a human being. As per the doctrine of karma... when time to leave arrives... the body decays and dies! We as a soul atman within desire removal of the impurities within at the earliest! It is for this reason we (as a soul) manifest body again and again.

It is an accepted fact that our soul atman within is the true governor of the body. It is our soul atman that has manifested the body and not vice versa. It is not within the capability of the body to manifest a soul atman. Right from the first manifestation as an amoeba (single cell formation) and to the last stage... the 8.4 millionth manifestation when human beings gained enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha)... we continue to manifest bodies.

On the earthly domain after the death of the body the family weeps feeling bereaved... in the cosmic domain nothing ever dies. We as a soul atman simply change the outer garment... as the changing of guards at Buckingham Palace! The cycle of manifestations continue until a human being reaches the stage of enlightenment and finally salvation.

Bhagavad Gita... the most sacred Scripture of Hinduism available on Mother Earth defines the relationship between God Almighty, soul atman and the body. It is Bhagavad Gita which aptly states performing our karma in the Nishakama way as the fruits of our karma always belong to the soul atman within and never the body. For the soul atman within... the cosmic life cycle of 8.4 million manifestations... an earthly abode of 96.4 million years is one single span of life.

Every soul atman liberates from the cycle of birth and death only in the human form. The moment it reaches the 8.4 millionth manifestation... the soul atman regains its original pure pristine form and goes back to the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). The kingdom of God is a point of no return! No liberated soul atman can leave the confines of the kingdom of God to manifest a body again! Once purified... it is purified forever until the dissolution of the cosmos occurs! After reaching the kingdom of God... death ceases to exist! More on death - http://www.godrealized.com/Death.html

I do not know why we die, for if I had known the answer to this, I could have had escaped long time ago to live forever. However, I can speculate here a little, as I think the answer to this question resides in the deep structures of the question, why do we live at the first place?
The wisdom of the act of dying, in my understanding, is only within the meaningfulness of life itself, death without serving some purpose to life is so barbaric a notion that it would have been abolished altogether from existence; if dying in any case was not for the purpose of living.
Live well!

All living things die, its part of life. If nothing was to die, then nothing would be here right now because life and death are the same.

Many reasons, depending on the plane of thought from which you are asking this.

We require rest points during the long overall Cycle of life and learning not only on earth but elsewhere. [There are exceptions as there are always exceptions]

The physical shell need only withstand but so much. And once it has served the purpose for which it was born and fulfills the contract it is meant to satisfy in a given lifetime, it simply terminates... 'No need to sustain it, for there exists still other learnings and de-briefing that one needs to undergo that one can continue the next segment of a long, arduous journey...

It's a cycle. We can't live forever, or we'll take too much space of the world, which means we'd have to have more food and water to provide ourselves. That would offbalance the "food pyramid" if you're familiar with that.

Plus, I'm not sure why you'd want to be immortal, long enough to see the sun expand and cook us off.

Because that is the way things were ment to be plus in all hoestly I would think people would eventually get tired of living if they lived forever and ever. Could you imagine being 1000 years old? I couldnt and Im not sure I would want to be.

All the cells in your body make copies of themselves before they die to ensure that the organism which is you continues to live. However, each time a copy is made it is not as accurate as the one before ( a bit like taking a photocopy of something and then photocopying the copy and photocopying the copy of the copy etc). Eventually the copies become so bad that the organism cannot sustain itself anymore and you die.

Death is the only truth in this world. Every thing else is false. If God has not made death necessary then managing the earth would have become impossible. We humans and all species put other flora & fauna and little species to death to sustain ourselves. Man is so much a cruel social animal that if he knew that death would not touch him/her then he/she would have become so much cruel to others that even God would have repented his creations. World is beautiful only because everytime, everywhere some thing new happens. And the life becomes interesting and not boring...

Our bodies die, but our souls, the energy that lives inside of our bodies, returns to the source. Bodies die so they can bring the lessons of life back to the source. There is no death of the soul, only an end to our trip to earth.
