Those huge shaped bottles in chemists' windows filled with coloured water? What was their origin and what did they signify?

In the old days before factory production the chemist would have to mix up their own medicines and potions. The two bottles would have a different solution in each that the chemist had made themselves. They would display the bottles in the windows to show that they were capable to making a potion that would remain the same. A bad potion would presumably not stay clear or the same colour.

My guess is they signified medicine. They were huge to attract attention may be? I went in to a shop the other day and I said to the shopkeep can I have a wasp please. He said we don't sell wasps here. I said well you've got one in the window.
